A story of how a 19 year old, Boyan Slat, combines environmentalism, entrepreneurism and technology to tackle global issues of sustainability. His passion, diving, was the driver for the project The Ocean Cleanup he started. He became frustrated when coming across more plastic bags than fish, and wondered: “why can’t we clean this up?”
He spent half a year of research to understand plastic pollution and the problems associated with cleaning it up and worked hard with a team of 100 people to prove feasibility of the concept he invented. An astonishing story of involvement and focused drive of one single person heading for a solution of a problem.
In 2012, The Ocean Cleanup Array was awarded Best Technical Design at the Delft University of Technology, and took second place at the iSea sustainable innovation award by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment. Boyan Slat has been recognised as one of the 20 Most Promising Young Entrepreneurs Worldwide (Intel EYE50).
